Well, I took the plunge and bought myself a bigger monitor, specifically a Dell E228WFP 22″ widescreen flat-panel LCD. Dell was having a promotion on them, and we ordered a couple at work for around the office, plus one additional one which I then “bought” from the company.
Not a bad little device overall. While it does use a 6-bit (interpolated up to 8-bit) colour palette, it also seems to be able to cover a fair chunk of the NTSC colour gamut, which is what I was looking for. And it’s good and contrasty, which is also a plus.
The fact that it also dominates the desk is something I can definitely appreciate. I used its inauguration as an excuse not only to take some pictures with the EOS Rebel XT, but to break in and test the utility of my Speedlite 430EX and mini-softbox. The results were, I submit, quite pleasing.
Of course, nothing is without its drawbacks. The monitor is superb for editing, but it certainly is not a great monitor for playing the game — my ATI Radeon 9600XT works well for most things (Dreamfall looks very impressive, for example, on the new screen) but NWN gives it trouble at any resolution that does not look like a pixelated mess. Fortunately, that’s what the Mac laptop in the foreground is for — I test Lost Sosaria on my Powerbook G4, for the most part.
Anyhow, I just wanted to give you all a look at the new toy. And yes, that is an area of Lost Sosaria that is being worked on in the pictures. Development has progressed nicely since I got set up again, although there will be a three week development hiatus beginning on July 23rd owing to the fact that I’ll be attending the 21st World Scouts Jamboree from then until August 11th.
If you will also be at the Jamboree, O Reader, I encourage you to hunt me down if you find you have the time — I’ll most likely be in the Faith and Beliefs area, as I have volunteered to work as part of the IST (International Service Team) there, in a Catholic capacity.
So I will see you all when I get back, and I may even have a few pictures of the first dungeon in Lost Sosaria to show you when I next post news to the site.
